The Sambar of 1962 was in its second year, a rear engined cabover van and truck with the engine of the Subaru 360, a two stroke twin of 356 cc that could be accessed from a hatch inside the vehicle. Commercial variants were marketed for delivery use, nicknamed the kuchibiru, or lower lip, Sambar, inspired by a competitor, the Kurogane Baby. With the Sambar, named after a species of deer, Subaru may have borrowed from the Volkswagen Type 2 van, whose upper trim level was the Samba.
