An automatic transmission was offered in the form of Subaru's ECVT system in tandem with full time 4WD and a viscous coupling differential. The Sambar of 1992 was in its third year of the fifth generation, a cabover truck and van with the four cylinder 660 cc engine of the Vivio. The Sambar has used a rear engine, rear wheel drive layout with body on frame rather than unibody construction. Later generations used the water cooled engine from the Subaru Rex, Vivio and the Pleo.
