The Rex ended in March 1992, when the Vivio replaced it, after a run in which 1,902,811 Subaru Rexes were built. Later the model gained something of a cult following in Japan, and it is popular in front wheel drive drift events. The Rex name came back in 2022 on a small crossover based on the Daihatsu Rocky. In some export markets the Sambar microvan was marketed as the Rex Combi. The third generation was sold in Europe as the M70 and M80, and in Australia as the Sherpa and Fiori.
