The only engine available initially was a 2.2 liter flat four producing 135 horsepower, which was replaced by a 2.5 liter twin cam engine with 155 horsepower for model year 1996. When the 1996 model year arrived the Outback gained more aggressive front bumper covers, with larger rally inspired driving lamps. In 1996 the MY1997 Outback also received the hood scoop with no performance change. The name was shortened to Outback when it launched in Australia in 1996.
