Subaru introduced the New Age Impreza to Japan in August 2000. It was larger than the car it replaced, with the sedan 40 millimeters wider and the wagon 5 millimeters wider, which put the two body styles in different Japanese tax classes. The coupe did not return, while the off road appearance package carried over. It was face lifted twice, known to enthusiasts as the Blobeye and the Hawkeye, and the wagon was also sold by Saab as the 9-2X from 2004 to 2006. Its model years run from 2001 to 2007.
