Although Subaru never acknowledged a defect in the engine, it was reworked for the Euro 5 model in 2011 to fix the problem. The third generation Forester was in its fourth year, available in Europe with the EJ20 gasoline engine and a diesel, and in North America with the 2.5 liter four and a turbo XT. Subaru switched the naturally aspirated Forester to the new 2.5 liter DOHC FB25 boxer engine, while the 2.5XT kept the turbocharged EJ255.
