The facelift of the fourth generation Forester reached the United States in April 2016 for the 2017 model year, and so the Forester of 2017 carried the updated styling. The fourth generation was a compact crossover SUV with the boxer engine and X-Mode, in its fifth year on sale, with the fifth generation due to be presented in New York in March 2018. The X-Mode AWD control system was developed for driving on uneven or slippery road conditions.
