The 1998 Forester had the 2.5 liter DOHC EJ25D engine, with no turbocharged engines in the American model. It was the first full model year of the Forester in the United States, where it was a new type of car from Subaru, with higher ground clearance than the Impreza and the boxer engine. The Forester was first introduced as the Streega concept at the 1995 Tokyo Motor Show. In its home market the Forester replaced the Impreza Gravel Express, sold in the United States as the Outback Sport.
