The BRAT of 1990 was in its thirteenth year, exported to Europe, Australia, Latin America and New Zealand, as the Brumby, MV Pickup and Shifter. Subaru never considered marketing the BRAT in their home market, due to a truncating demand of pickup trucks that had been occurring since the late 1970s. The BRAT was four wheel drive and powered by the Subaru EA engine. It was an export only model, never officially sold in Japan, and became a popular grey import there.
