The introduction of a new Onyx Edition trim level marked the 2022 Ascent. It was the fourth model year of the three row crossover that Subaru builds in Lafayette, Indiana, with a 2.4 liter turbocharged boxer engine and standard all wheel drive, seating seven or eight, and it was the flagship of the Subaru range in North America. It was to be the flagship Subaru vehicle in North America. In terms of exterior design it was akin to a three row Outback, as the Ascent is to the Forester.
