In 1968, two sport models known as the Subaru Young S and Young SS were launched, the latter with the EK32 S engine with chromed cylinders and dual carburetors producing 36 PS. In August 1968, responding to more powerful kei cars, power was increased to 25 PS. From 1968 approximately 10,000 were exported to the US, at an original price of 1,297 dollars. The Subaru 360 was designed in response to the Japanese government's light car or kei car regulations and its proposal for a larger national car.
