Stopping power in the P5 came originally from a Girling brake system that employed 11 inch drums all round, but this was a heavy car, and by the time of the London Motor Show in October 1959 Girling front power disc brakes were fitted. The P5 of 1959 was the 3 litre, in its first full year of production, available with automatic transmission or overdrive on the manual gearbox. Rover built the P5 in this first full year of sales.
