A Bosch Motronic engine management system taken from the BMW 7 Series (E38) was fitted to the Range Rover V8 in 1999, replacing the Lucas GEMS system, together with revised engine mounts and a structural alloy sump to stiffen the engine and keep vibration out of the cabin; the new 4.0-litre made 188 horsepower and the 4.6 made 218. BMW management had by then decided the P38A would have a short life and cancelled planned updates for the 1999 model year.
