For 1996 the center console on floor shift models received a minor redesign, and it was also the last year for the BYP body cladding package. It was the last model year of the sixth generation Grand Prix, which had begun in 1988, and in January 1996 the 1997 Grand Prix was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show. The 1996 car was the end of a Kansas City built generation that Motor Trend had named its Car of the Year for 1988, and the next car was a new design shown at Detroit in January 1996, sold from 1997 to 2003.
