In January 1996 the 1997 Grand Prix was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show, after General Motors unveiled the 300 GPX Concept at the 1995 Detroit Auto Show on January 4, 1995, a near exact preview of the redesign. Work had begun in 1990 under design chief John Manoogian II, who described his team's idea as a Learjet for the ground, and the final design was approved by 1993. The seventh generation Grand Prix was sold from 1997 to 2003, and the coupe was kept until 2002.
