In 1982 the Ital production line was moved from Cowley to Longbridge, to allow Cowley to be refitted for the upcoming start of production of the Austin Maestro and the Ital's ultimate replacement, the Austin Montego. The Ital was only ever intended as a stop gap replacement. The move was made so Cowley could build the Austin Maestro. The Ital was still the last Morris. The Austin Montego was the replacement that would soon follow, in 1984, and the Maestro would also take over at Cowley.
