A flagship model with the badge Exceed was introduced in September 1987, with two tone paint, 15 inch alloy wheels, a light brown interior, heated seats and adjustable suspension seats. In 1987 a version of the Pajero or Montero was rebadged by Dodge as the Raider, which ran through 1989. For the October 1987 NE series in Australia the Japanese 2.6 liter petrol was replaced by the Australian made Astron II version. The Pajero name comes from the Geoffroy's cat, Leopardus pajeros, and it was sold as the Montero in North America and Shogun in the United Kingdom.
