On 17 October 2005 Mitsubishi launched the second generation model, dropping the Airtrek in Japan in favour of adopting the global name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. The first generation was in its fifth and last year of its own line, a compact crossover based on the ASX concept, introduced as an Airtrek in Japan and an Outlander elsewhere. The Outlander is a compact crossover SUV made by Mitsubishi Motors since 2001.
