The North American version of the second generation, powered by a newly designed 6B31 3.0 liter V6 SOHC MIVEC, was shown in April 2006 at the New York International Auto Show prior to its release in October. The Airtrek name had been chosen to describe adventure journeys, and the Outlander nameplate replacing it evoked journeying to distant, unexplored lands. The second generation was built on the GS platform. The second generation used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen and PSA Peugeot Citroen.
