The first Lancer Evolution used the 2.0 liter turbocharged DOHC engine and all wheel drive drivetrain of the original Galant VR-4 in a Lancer chassis, and was sold as the base GSR Evolution and the RS. The RS was a stripped down version without power windows and seats, anti lock brakes or a rear wiper, with steel wheels, to weigh about 70 kilograms less than the GSR, ready for racing or tuning. About 5,000 of the first generation were sold between 1992 and 1993. Its model years run from 1992 to 1993.
