The Galant became Mitsubishi's first car sold in the United States in 1971, when Chrysler, its new partner and stakeholder, began importing it as the Dodge Colt, with other names elsewhere. In September 1971 the 1.4 liter and 1.6 liter versions, the 14L and 16L, replaced the 1.3 and 1.5 liter engines of the original Galant in Japan. The name Galant comes from the French word for chivalrous. The Galant evolved from a compact sedan into a mid-size car over its life.
