Though still considered very compact, the 2001 Mini hatchback's length of 3.63 m was 58 cm, or 19 percent, greater than the 3.05 m length of the 1959 Mini. In 2002 the R50 was in its first full year of sales, a front engined, front wheel drive family of retro styled cars built at Plant Oxford, and it was sold in Japan and other markets worldwide. The Rover Group had unveiled the concept in 1997, and BMW took over the whole project in 1999.
