In 1988 Austin Rover decided to keep the Mini in production for as long as it was viable to do so, ending reports that it would be discontinued by 1991, by which time the original Metro would also be replaced. Rover Group, including Mini, was acquired by British Aerospace in 1988, which gave the Mini a new owner but no change in its future. The decision reversed earlier expectations that the car would end in 1991.
