The Mini of 1989 was in its fifth year of the Mark V, a small car produced by the Rover Group, which British Aerospace owned, at Longbridge. Its future had been secured by the 1988 decision to keep it in production as long as it was viable, and in 1989 the Cooper revival was in preparation for the following year, with the 1275 cc engine of the old Cooper S. It was the last full year of the Mark V.
