Introduced for 1985 as the introductory Merkur vehicle, the XR4Ti was a performance oriented hatchback sized nearly identically to the Ford Mustang hatchback, a slightly rebodied version of the Ford Sierra XR4i. It was introduced at a starting price of 16,503 dollars. Final assembly was by Wilhelm Karmann at Rheine in West Germany, using body panels from Ford's factory in Genk. Standard equipment included air conditioning and Pirelli tires on 14 inch alloy wheels.
