For 1992 the Tempo and Topaz were mildly restyled, and the 3.0 liter Vulcan V6 from the Taurus and Sable was introduced as an option for the GL and LX models and as the standard engine on the GLS. The 1992 model year was the last year of the Topaz LS and LTS and the XR5, the sport models, and a slightly redesigned gauge cluster with a tachometer was added. The Topaz was the Mercury counterpart of the Ford Tempo, a compact car on the chassis of the Ford Escort.
