The 2001 Mountaineer was the last year of the first generation, which shared the chassis of the second generation Ford Explorer. It was a mid size luxury SUV with a single comprehensive trim level, powered by the 215 horsepower 5.0 liter V8 or the 205 horsepower 4.0 liter V6, and was assembled at Louisville Assembly, with additional production at St. Louis Assembly before 2007. The second generation arrived for 2002. The Mountaineer was the first Mercury SUV and the divisional counterpart of the Ford Explorer.
