The 1958 Monterey brought an all new engine, the 383 cubic inch MEL V8, and with the new engine came the Multi Drive three speed automatic transmission. As tailfins began to gain favor with competitors, Mercury sought to downplay the appearance and offered similar appearances with much less dramatic bodywork. The Monterey was the full size Mercury sedan beneath the Montclair and the Turnpike Cruiser, on the 122 inch wheelbase.
