For 1959 the Monterey grew in size to a 126 inch wheelbase, and for the first time since 1940 Mercury used its own chassis and body. It was offered in five body styles, with two and four door pillared sedans, a two door convertible and two and four door Cruiser hardtops that took their name from the Turnpike Cruiser. As the base trim Mercury sedan the Monterey received a 210 horsepower, 312 cubic inch V8.
