For 1971 the Montego's grille was restyled to an egg crate style, retaining the forward thrusting shape, and the concealed headlamps were dropped from the MX Brougham and Villager. The Cyclone name continued to be used through the 1971 model year, after which it was absorbed into the Montego line. The 1971 Montego was the last year of the first generation. It took its name from Montego Bay in Jamaica. The Montego was a Mercury intermediate, the counterpart of the Ford Fairlane and Torino.
