After 1996 General Motors discontinued the Buick Roadmaster and Chevrolet Caprice, along with ending full size station wagon production in favor of full size SUVs, and shifted its full size sedan range entirely to front wheel drive. The 1996 Grand Marquis, a rear wheel drive four door sedan built at St. Thomas Assembly, was the last model year of competition from the Caprice and Roadmaster. It was built at the St. Thomas Assembly Plant in Southwold, Ontario, with the Ford Crown Victoria.
