For 1982 simulated vents were removed from the front fenders of the Grand Marquis, the last year in which it was a sub model of the Marquis. For 1983 Mercury's lineup moved the Marquis nameplate to the mid size segment, replacing the Cougar, introduced a new Cougar coupe and discontinued the Zephyr, leaving the Grand Marquis as the full size Mercury. It was built at St. Louis Assembly in Hazelwood until 1985 and then at St. Thomas Assembly in Southwold, Ontario.
