1949 Mercury Eight

Automobiles

For 1949 Mercury introduced its third generation design as its first postwar line, with a substantial modernization of the chassis. The shift from the Ford body to the Lincoln body proved successful, increasing sales by over 250,000 vehicles from 1948 to 1949 and making Mercury the sixth best selling automobile in the United States. In 1949 Sam Barris built the first lead sled from a 1949 Mercury Eight. The Mercury Eight sold more than 250,000 more cars in 1949 than in 1948.
