For 1968 the Cougar included federal safety enhancements that added side marker lights and front outboard shoulder belts, and in a first for Ford Motor Company offered an electrically operated sunroof as an option, which was not a popular option. The GT-E was introduced above the Cougar GT with a 390 horsepower 427 V8, and the 428 Cobra Jet Ram Air arrived on April 1, 1968. The XR7-G appearance package was built 619 times.
