The 1967 Cougar was released by Lincoln Mercury on September 30, 1966 and accounted for nearly 40 percent of the 1967 sales of the entire division. Initially released solely as a two door hardtop, it was priced 284 dollars more than the equivalent Mustang, with a base price of 2,854 dollars. It was the first Lincoln Mercury vehicle with hidden headlamps, and received the 1967 Motor Trend Car of the Year award, the only Mercury to do so.
