For the 1969 model year the Cougar underwent a mid cycle revision alongside its Mustang counterpart, moving to Coke bottle styling with a sweeping body crease, and a convertible body style was added in standard and XR-7 trims. The 289 was dropped and a two barrel 351 Windsor became the standard engine. The Eliminator was introduced on April 1, 1969 as Mercury's showcase for the Boss 302 engine, and the Sports Special package was offered only in 1969.
