In 2020 Mazda introduced a mild hybrid 1.5 liter petrol engine for the Mazda2 in Europe, offered only with a six speed manual gearbox. In June exports of the sedan and hatchback to the United States stopped because of new regulations and slow sales, and on 27 August the Mazda2 based Yaris was discontinued in Mexico too. That ended the Toyota branded cars made from the Mazda2 in North America after a run that began in the 2016 model year.
