With the new kei rules of March 1990 the Scrum gained a 660 cc three cylinder engine, 38 PS or 58 PS with an intercooled turbo, under the seat, and it formally moved to the Autozam brand, with the front logo changed from Mazda to Autozam. A special edition, the Stand Off, based on the cheap PX passenger type, was set up in June, and the output of the naturally aspirated engine rose to 42 PS in November. The name Scrum comes from the rugby term, chosen to suggest cooperation among customers and the Mazda group.
