The RX-8 Spirit R, the final special edition, went on sale on 24 November 2011 at all Mazda and Anfini dealerships in Japan with an initial production target of 1,000 units. Falling sales in Europe and the rising yen meant that Mazda could not justify continued sales in other markets, and in 2011 the RX-8 was in the last full year of its nine year production run. The rotary Wankel engine uses a triangular rotor inside a near oval housing.
