In March 1979 Mazda added the SE to the Japanese line up, a version with a sunroof. Racing began that year: the RX-7 entered the IMSA GTU series and placed first and second at the 24 Hours of Daytona in its first year, taking the series championship, and a 13B engined car failed by less than a second to qualify for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The first generation weighed under 1,100 kilograms with a 50:50 weight distribution.
