In 2003 Mazda showed the Ibuki concept car, which would give its design cues to the next generation MX-5, while the NB2 continued on sale with its 1.8 liter variable valve timing engine and its six speed manual option. Special editions kept appearing during the year, and the MX-5 remained a popular base for amateur racing in series such as Spec Miata in the United States. The name Miata comes from an Old High German word for reward.
