In late 1993 a larger 1.8 liter engine became standard in most markets, replacing the 1.6 liter four that had powered the first generation since 1989. The roadster remained a simple two seater with pop up headlights, a standard five speed manual and an optional four speed automatic, and it was built at Mazda's Hiroshima plant and sold in Japan as the Eunos Roadster. It was created under the design credo of unity of horse and rider.
