In 1994 the NA MX-5 was in its sixth year, with the 1.8 liter engine as standard in most markets. To keep weight and price down, base models were not equipped with power steering, air conditioning or a sound system and had steel wheels, and the pop up headlights remained a feature unique to this generation. Total first generation sales eventually reached 228,961 cars between 1989 and 1997. The small, light and minimalist design was meant to revive the classic British roadster.
