The facelifted CX-5 reached North America as a 2016.5 model, with new exterior styling, less road noise, an improved infotainment system and a sport mode for the six speed automatic, and LED lights on higher trim levels. In Malaysia the locally assembled facelift went on sale in early 2016 and a 2.2 liter diesel front drive variant followed in July. The second generation was unveiled on 15 November 2016. It was Mazda's first model to use the Kodo design language and the first fully developed with the Skyactiv technologies.
