The first generation CX-5 continued through 2015 with the 2.0 and 2.5 liter petrol engines and the 2.2 liter diesel, as the most popular Mazda. In Malaysia a new base variant called the GL was launched in April and the facelift was introduced in May. The IIHS also tested a 2015 CX-5 on the passenger side in a second small overlap test, where it earned an acceptable rating. The CX-5 was the successor to both the Tribute and the slightly larger CX-7.
