In 1997 the Carol was in its third year as the Autozam Carol, front or all wheel drive and sharing the platform of the Suzuki Alto, with the model specific bodywork that the third generation had received. Retro styled kei cars flooded the market at that time, and Mazda had developed two of them, the Carol Custom and the Carol Classic. The third generation Carol was available as a three-door hatchback. Mazda also developed two retro-styled versions.
