An entirely new Carol appeared in October 1998 as a 1999 model, now with the Mazda brand name, as the Autozam badge was being discontinued. It was similar to the Suzuki Alto, with front or all wheel drive and the 657 cc F6A or a new 658 cc DOHC engine, and closely related to the AZ Offroad and AZ Wagon. It got a new look in December 2000. The car was sold in Japan as a kei car, built to the size and engine limits of that class. Its model years run from 1998 to 2003.
