The Bongo of 1996 was in its fourteenth year of the third generation, a cabover van sold in Japan alongside the Bongo Friendee of 1995, a passenger MPV on a different platform. The Kia Bongo, built from the same design in South Korea, continued to be available as late as 1999. It also formed the basis for the long running Kia Bongo range. The Bongo was also known as the Ford Econovan and Eunos Cargo, and it has been built with rear, middle and front mounted engines.
