Until 1989 Japanese car taxation used a car's width as a key determinant, which shaped the Capella of the time, and in 1989 the fourth generation 626 was in its third year. It sold as the 626 sedan, hatchback and coupe in export markets, with the station wagon on the GV platform from the previous year, and was also the basis for the Ford Telstar and Ford Probe, which shared its platform. Ford used the platform for the Telstar and Probe.
