The Continental Mark V, a substantial revision of the Mark IV at 230 inches long, went on sale for 1977 with the 460 cubic inch V8 optional and a smaller 400 cubic inch V8 as standard in the interest of fuel economy. For 1977 only California bound cars had turbine style aluminum wheels standard, and 1977 was the first year since 1960 that a Mark came with an all metal, body color painted roof as standard equipment. The Mark V was a personal luxury coupe 230 inches long, the third generation of the Mark series that began with the 1969 Mark III.
